PROGRAM - JULY 10, 2019 - TOM SCHROEDER

Our presenter today was our own Tom Schroeder.

Originally from Minnesota, as a young boy Tom was inspired by a neighbor who was a wildlife artist. Tom, by profession, is an architect and started painting seriously only 18 years ago. He is self taught. 

His subject today is an Amish farm scene. Being inspired by typical subjects shown in a unique way, Tom can easily spend 30 to 40 hours on a painting, several being painted at the same time. He noted that he is always aware of 'the composition within the composition'. He does a pencil sketch, then a color study.

Tom is very methodical, he likes Black Velvet brushes, uses Prussian Blue and Indian Red for his go to grey, many times uses Arches 300 pound but was using a newly purchased 156 pound roll of Arch's, paper today. 

Today's painting featured a snow covered hill, a barn used as a school house and Amish buggies. His multilayered shadows and sky left us all feeling the chill on this winter morning.
