How long have you been a member of the GCWS and why did you join?
I don’t know! Marilyn Bishop was still president. Why? I wanted to belong to an organization of people of like mind who encouraged and promoted watercolors.
Have you held any positions with the GCWS; if so, what positions?
No, just a helper at some of the shows.

What are some of your artistic achievements?
I have been teaching watercolor at least 11 years. I have had several solo shows and many group exhibits. I have given demos for several clubs and groups (Dearborn Hills Methodist Church, Colerain Artists). I have won awards in outdoor events locally and in Columbia City, IN. I am most excited about the painting that hangs in the North Dearborn (IN) library as part of their permanent collection. My work has traveled to many states and as far away as Australia – of course, when I sell I’m given visiting rights! I have taught elementary children and senior citizens at Mt. St. Joseph College.

Describe your usual procedures for creating a painting.
I photograph a scene or object that excites me and I say “that’s paintable”. Of course, I have lots more photos than actually get painted! I print out and study the photo, thinking what procedure I will use – I like wet on wet; I like to pour. I sometimes play with pencil sketches and value studies. Because I have problems with perspective I will project a photo to newsprint, then transfer it to 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. I will embellish the tracing. The “painting” – that’s what it’s about! If the painting starts well I have been known to put in late hours. I like trying and learning new processes, but I only take part of each experience with me to the next project.
How long have you been painting.
I started in oils in the ‘60s, then did pastels and charcoal. I began in watercolor in 1997.

In what medium, other than watercolor or acrylic, do you work?
Oil, pastel and charcoal, but not since I started in watercolor.
Where do you get your inspiration for paintings?
Everywhere. A young boy old me once “if he saw it he could paint it” - I liked that. I take lots of pictures and get inspiration from people, color, lights and dark shadows, water, mountains, birds and other animals.
Are you a teacher?
I hope so. I prefer the title “instructor” and sharing what I know.
Where do you see yourself in the future? (ie., is painting a hobby; will you enter shows; do you see yourself teaching?)
I hope to be teaching and painting forever. They say artistic ability is the last to leave us.
