FEATURED ARTIST - EILEEN HULSMAN

How long have you been a member of the GCWS and why did you join?
I was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club and heard about Marilyn Bishop’s plans to begin the GCWS. I jumped in pretty much at the beginning, but because I had my own business at that time I could not attend GCWS meetings.

Have you held any positions with the GCWS; if so, what positions?
Currently I am President. It has been a great experience and it’s a great experience for any member who wants to know other artists and get involved. Volunteer for a committee or to be a board member; it makes you feel that you are a “real member”.

What are some of your artistic achievements?
When I was a student, I won a number of awards. As an adult, my display work has been featured in 5 magazines. To me, the display work was like making a picture or concept come to life and I won gold medals 5 times for my displays, and my work was featured in full page articles twice.

Describe your usual procedures for creating a painting.
The picture is usually in my head first, an idea that dominos into something bigger. I love plein aire painting and find it totally relaxing.

How long have you been painting.
Now you are asking my age! Let’s just say – since high school!

In what medium, other than watercolor or acrylic, do you work?
I love acrylics, they are so forgiving. I wish people could be as forgiving as acrylic paints! I also create jewelry, design and make clothing and professional floral designs.

Where do you get your inspiration for paintings?
Most of my inspiration is from nature or from vacations, places we visit. I love to travel and take photos and use them as a source (painting memories). I have painted so many lighthouses from Michigan and the rocky shores of Maine.

Are you a teacher?
Although I’m not trained, I taught 2 years of high school art as well as private lessons.

Where do you see yourself in the future? (ie., is painting a hobby; will you enter shows; do you see yourself teaching?)
Now that I have more time, I want to develop my technique with acrylics. Who knows, whatever God has planned for me.

Is there anything else you would like for us to know about you and your art?
The education I had at Central Academy of Commercial Art and the Art Museum were a fantastic foundation, but workshops I have taken from Tom Lynch, Ray Loos and Tony Couch, as well as studying with Sandy Maudlin and others are just as important. You grow with education and age.
